For many years, nothing had changed when it came to insulation: mountaineers had to choose between down or synthetic fiber. Both materials have their advantages and disadvantages. We didn't want to settle for that. Instead of being limited by previous technologies, we developed an alternative: Aetherm Precision Insulation. The result of years of development does what we wanted: a balance between warmth and weight, feel and durability, pack size and comfort. Mountain Equipment's new, patent-pending technology changes the status quo and offers the warmth and pleasant feel of down, combined with the robustness of weatherproof synthetic fiber insulation.
We currently only use Aetherm technology in our Oreus collection, but in the future we will use it for other products due to its versatility.

Down or synthetic fiber | A question of the past
The difficult question "Down or synthetic fiber?" was often the first question to be asked when planning a trip. Both keep you warm, but they also have their disadvantages: Down has an outstanding thermal performance at a low weight and feels particularly comfortable - but loses a lot of performance when it gets wet. Synthetic fiber warms almost as well when wet as it does when dry, but cannot be compared to down in terms of thermal performance, weight or pack size.
We have solved this problem with Aetherm technology: it combines the warmth and comfort of down with the robustness and weather resistance of synthetic fiber.
A real innovation in the insulation sector
Aetherm Precision Insulation sets new standards in the insulation sector. It has an exceptionally good warmth-to-weight ratio, high loft with a small pack size and feels very comfortable.
The patent-pending construction consists of multiple strands of recycled polyester fibers woven into a heat-reflective layer. The three-dimensional structure maximizes bulk while reducing weight and pack size. Intermediate seams are not required, which minimizes cold bridges and moisture absorption.
Aetherm has some advantages over down, but feels just as comfortable. It scores points in damp conditions or snowfall, as it hardly absorbs any moisture and dries very quickly. Like down, it has a high loft and is just as light.
Aetherm insulation extends the range of use of insulating clothing and thus also the radius of tours all year round.

Mountain Equipment & Isolation | We build on experience
Mountain Equipment has its origins in the manufacture of insulated clothing and equipment. From hand-stuffed down sleeping bags from the UK's Peak District to the use of innovative synthetic fibres that are essential to modern outdoor clothing and sleep systems.
We have over 60 years of experience in the design and manufacture of insulating clothing and are continually improving our technologies to meet the high demands of modern mountaineers.
The development of the Oreus series
The Oreus series makes mountain sports clothing more versatile than ever before.
Thanks to the Aetherm™ insulation, the Oreus jacket and vest can be used in a wide variety of challenging conditions. The jacket works as an outer layer, as a super warm midlayer or as a light safety jacket. The vest expands the combination possibilities even further.
Its thermal performance, short drying time and low weight and pack size make the Oreus the ideal companion for many mountain sports activities.
